Requiem

One of the saddest things for me to think about is that I missed the chance to see Requiem live, October 2004 in New Orleans. At the time I didn’t know who they were, so I went to see Eyehategod instead. Okay, Eyehategod was amazing, I can’t deny that. But two years later and Requiem, now disbanded, is one of my favorite bands.

So here I am offering you my favorite song of theirs, “Deliverance” from their album Storm Heaven

If you dig it, head over to CrimethInc and buy a copy. And while you’re at it, buy me a book or twelve.

DELIVERANCE

One escapes—a boy won’t go back
I did my time in the prison you call life
In spite of surveillance, the judgmental eyes
Defying the lies that there’s nothing outside
One escapes
From landscapes laid waste by your toil
From cities that run on your blood, sweat, and tears
Come workers—desert
Come soldiers—desert
Come, life is for living, not living in fear
What chain chokes your throat, what gate bars your path
What prison entombs you in concrete and stone
What fence stays your step save the one you accept
What key could release you from walls of your own

No—this girl won’t go back
The older I get, the more I want to fight
To destroy institutions, for total revolution
No compromise, it’s my fucking life
Fight—for each inch of ground
For each hour untrammeled, for every wrist bound
For songs yet unsung, desires unrealized
For all of the ones who should be at our sides
Don’t go back
No don’t fear, don’t relent, don’t back down
Don’t falter, don’t turn away now
No wealth could replace the riches we forfeit
Nor monuments ransom the chances we waste
None will even recall what we squandered at all
If we never dare to give wings to our longings
If we never dare to give teeth to our rage

Do you remember what I said?
I wouldn’t take away a word
Better die in defeat, starved, crazed, and alone
Far from this or any herd
No law can give freedom, no state can give power
No wages can buy back the life that we sell
No god can grant grace in this forsaken place
We have to storm heaven and seize them ourselves

Storm heaven
Unleash hell

Ill Conduit

I picked up this sludgy four song CDR at a show at the Sound Stage in Conway, AR. I remember that the band included Chuck and Phillip Schaaf (now of Deadbird), but I don’t know who else played in the band. I know I said I wouldn’t be putting up albums, but I don’t think a homemade CDR with a photocopied cover that you can’t buy anywhere is really pushing things too far.

Download, enjoy.

Acid Mothers Temple

I’ve been on a big Acid Mothers Temple kick lately, reveling in the drug-free psychedelic weirdness and beauty that comes from these Japanese freaks of art. last.fm apparently recorded one of their concerts and has made the video available. You can see it below, and you can visit their last.fm page to preview several other tracks.

Acid Mothers Temple also have a Myspace presence and you can read more about their various permutations at Wikipedia.

Psalters

Psalters are a praise and worship group like no other. They are nomadic by nature, touring around the world in an old school bus, playing shows and recording on donations alone.

Two of their albums can be downloaded through Potter Street Records for a donation, the latest, Divine Liturgy of the Wretched Exiles and a compilation of earlier recordings, Us Vs. Us. They also offer a number of downloads on their website.

For a taste you can download one of my favorites, “Dumpster Divers” from Divine Liturgy.

La Otracina

If you’re in a psychedelic, space rock kind of mood head over to the amazing Sludge Swamp and snag the two-disc trip fest Love Love Love by La Otracina. I’m not even halfway through it yet, but it’s so ridiculously beautiful that I have to get other people listening. Go listen!

the mighty Boris!

I came across this amazing video of Boris live who knows how long ago, and I keep returning to it. After seeing them live in person for the first time last October it’s hard to settle for recordings, but this is still great.

While you’re at it, their upcoming album Smile leaked not too long ago, at least the Japanese version did. Look around and I’m sure you’ll find it. And while you’re waiting, here’s the video for the first single from the American version, “Statement”

Can you doubt we were made for each other?

I first heard Lyle Lovett and his Large Band perform “Here I Am” many years ago on some awards show. I didn’t have the album, but I’d taped the show and watched that performance over and over. The performance was wonderful, and watching Lyle recite this bizarre poetry was quite the intro to the man’s body of work. The studio version turned out to be just as good, so I wanted to offer it to you.

The Queen of My World

I just saw this amazing fan-made video for Bikini Kill’s “Rebel Girl” and just had to share.

Faye Richmonde

I know this song has been posted plenty of places around the web, but it holds a special place in my… heart, so I’m going to kick off this blog with “My Pussy Belongs to Daddy” by Faye Richmonde.

Welcome to Blank Stares and Silence. Hope you enjoy your stay.
